The Morning I Lost Wi-Fi (and Almost Lost My Mind)

I woke up that morning feeling truly peaceful. The weather was warm, sunshine on my skin, and I was in this beautiful place with a mix of old friends and new ones. We were there to learn, to connect, to have fun. For a moment, I just lay there and felt grateful.

Then my thoughts drifted to my family. What were they doing? Did they miss me? I definitely missed them. The urge to call them hit me suddenly – not gently, but like a wave.

I grabbed my phone. No internet. No signal. No Wi-Fi. Nothing.

And just like that, the peace vanished. My mind went from calm to chaos in about three seconds. How was this possible? What would I do? The urge to connect wasn't just a desire anymore – it was physical. I could feel it in my chest.

I threw on my clothes, grabbed my stuff, and practically ran to the restaurant downstairs. The restaurant. My saviour. There was Wi-Fi there. As I walked in, I felt this wave of relief wash over me – real gratitude for the existence of the internet. I remember thinking: thank you to every single person who ever contributed to the invention of Wi-Fi.

I sat down, ordered a coffee, and enjoyed the smell of it for exactly two seconds. Then I tried to connect. It didn't work.

The Wi-Fi wouldn't connect. I tried again. And again. Nothing. The chaos returned, louder this time. I sat there, staring at my phone, feeling completely stuck.

Then I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around and saw my friend, smiling, holding up her phone – connected to the internet. She shared her connection with me. Hero. Absolute hero.

Later that day, once the panic had passed, I thought about what had happened. I'd gone from total peace to total panic in under a minute – all because I couldn't get online. I was surrounded by beautiful people and a beautiful place, and the only thing I could think about was Wi-Fi.

That morning taught me something I didn't expect: the internet isn't just a tool for me. It's a lifeline I didn't know I was holding so tightly. And maybe – just maybe – it's worth learning to loosen my grip.

Lo que aprendí

The internet isn't just a tool for me. It's a lifeline I didn't know I was holding so tightly.

Lo que cambié

Maybe – just maybe – it's worth learning to loosen my grip.
