A Blue Light in Pitch Darkness

The blue light from my phone screen was tiring my eyes in the darkness of a room where midnight had long since passed. My eyes were almost closing, and I was forcing them to stay open. As I scrolled aimlessly through social media, I noticed my fingers moving as if they were a keyboard working independently of me. I could neither fully grasp the depth of the texts I was reading nor allow the fleeting images shared in the digital world to stir any real emotion in me. The digital world had quietly taken over my everyday life, reduced my attention span to seconds and, most importantly, completely disrupted the quality of my sleep. When I lay down at night, my mind felt battered and exhausted, like thousands of browser tabs that would not close.
My breaking point that night came while I was trying to read. I saw that I could not get through a single paragraph without losing focus, and that every three sentences I was fighting the urge to look at my phone. My mind was constantly waiting to be stimulated by the next notification. In that moment I realised that my digital life was no longer just a tool for communication or information; it had become a mechanism undermining my cognitive processes, my emotional balance and my daily focus. This realisation was a harsh but shattering awakening.
That very day, I decided to make a radical change. I turned off all social media notifications on my phone and started leaving the device outside my bedroom before going to sleep. In the first few days, I noticed my brain missing that familiar digital dopamine; my hand would reach reflexively for the empty table. But within a week, my scattered attention gave way to a calmer focus. Touching a printed book in the evenings instead of a screen soothed my mind and brought back the deep, restful sleep I had missed for so long.
Ce am învățat
This process taught me to turn inward, to discover the calm life within me, and to fill in and beautify the empty corners of my soul.
Ce am schimbat
Now I manage social media – it no longer manages me. I make a point of not opening social media before I've read or done the work I need to do.
