The Cost of Being Constantly Connected

Digital life had woven itself into my existence far more deeply than I ever realised. Especially with the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, it felt as though I no longer had any private, personal space detached from the digital world. My real awakening came when I encountered the Unplugged project. It made me realise that I urgently needed to step back and listen to my own emotions and needs. I understood that I had to allow my mind and body to distance themselves from the virtual world and return to my true self.

The realisation of how the perception of perfection on social media was dragging me into an unconscious state of stress hit me like a slap in the face. We were all caught up in a race, staging a kind of fabricated happiness for one another. This exaggerated digital life became my biggest obstacle, particularly during university exam weeks. Spending my energy and attention on screens when I desperately needed to focus felt exactly like wasting precious natural resources. It drastically shortened my attention span and increased the sheer amount of energy I had to spend just to complete the simplest tasks. Even worse, I spent my nights – the essential hours my body needed to regenerate that energy – absorbed in screens, trapping myself in a vicious cycle of sleeping but never actually resting.

Our friendships suffered too. Because we constantly communicated through text, we missed out on real facial expressions and tones of voice, leading to frequent misunderstandings that hurt one another. Unplugged showed me that it's time to break this cycle and reclaim my real life.

Ce am învățat

Ultimately, this whole experience taught me to reflect more deeply on myself. There are no emotions in the digital universe, because machines do not feel. I realised how profoundly this state of emotionlessness – something so inherently contrary to human nature – was affecting me. I came to understand that the digital world can never be purely beneficial, but it isn't entirely harmful either. In an evolving world, living completely isolated from technology is nearly impossible. So I chose to focus on building a healthy boundary. I truly felt the vital importance of balance, and I am now actively learning how to maintain it.

Ce am schimbat

I started this journey by accepting that completely removing digital life from my existence was neither a solution nor beneficial. As I placed the concept of balance at the centre of my life, I kept reminding myself that I was not alone, and that almost everyone is fighting this exact same battle with excess. I drastically cut down on the mindless, aimless time I spent on my phone and replaced it with real hobbies. The most crucial element in making these new habits sustainable was allowing myself time to just be – to simply pass the time and rest without the pressure of doing something productive. I have been working hard to let go of the guilt that often follows a perceived lack of productivity, and learning instead to simply enjoy the moment.
